What to Consider When Buying a VPS in Latvia

Choosing a Latvia VPS is not just about finding the lowest monthly price. The right configuration depends on your target users, IP requirements, workload, and network needs.

1. Check the Actual Server Location

Most Latvia VPS services are located in Riga, so confirm the actual data-center location rather than relying only on a “Latvia” label.

If your users are mainly in the Baltics or nearby European countries, Riga can be a practical location. However, latency depends on the actual network route, so testing the server IP from your target user region is more reliable than judging by geography alone. ([WeaselCloud][1])

2. Decide Whether You Need a Latvia IP

Before buying, determine whether you specifically need:

A Latvian IPv4 address

IPv6

A dedicated IPv4

A particular IP reputation or routing

If the project requires a Latvia IP for regional access or other location-specific purposes, confirm the IP allocation before ordering.

3. Pay Attention to Network Specifications

Don't look only at the advertised port speed.

Check:

Port speed

Monthly traffic allowance

Whether traffic is unmetered

IPv4/IPv6 availability

Network test IP or Looking Glass

Any port restrictions

A VPS advertised with a high-speed port can still perform differently depending on routing and the destination network. Some Latvia VPS providers explicitly provide test IPs or Looking Glass tools for pre-purchase testing. ([FormoHost][2])

4. Choose CPU and RAM Based on the Workload

For a small website, proxy, development environment, or lightweight application, 1 vCore and 1–2 GB RAM may be sufficient.

For databases, Docker workloads, control panels, Windows, or applications with multiple concurrent processes, consider 2+ vCores and 4 GB or more RAM.

Don't pay for additional CPU or RAM simply because the specification is higher. Match the resources to actual usage.

5. Check Storage Carefully

Two VPS plans with the same CPU and RAM can have very different storage performance.

Look at:

SSD or NVMe SSD

System disk capacity

Additional data disk

Backup/snapshot options

Disk expansion options

If the VPS will host a database or perform frequent read/write operations, storage performance becomes more important.

6. Linux or Windows?

Linux is generally suitable for websites, APIs, Docker, and most server-side applications.

If you need Windows Server, check whether the VPS includes a Windows license and whether there are additional licensing charges. Current Latvia VPS offerings vary in their Windows support and licensing arrangements. ([CloudHosting][3])

7. Test Before Moving Production Workloads

For a business application, don't judge a Latvia VPS solely from the specification table.

Before migration, test:

Ping and latency

traceroute / mtr

Download and upload speed

Stability during different periods

Access to your main users' networks

This is particularly important if your users are outside Latvia.
